Identifying Suicide Warning Signs

Suicide does not have one single cause. The causes of suicide are complex and determined by multiple combinations of factors, such as mental health conditions, substance use, painful losses, exposure to violence, and social isolation. Warning signs are clues that someone may be in danger of suicide, either immediately or in the near future. Most people thinking about suicide show one or more warning signs, but do not communicate to others directly. Recognizing warning signs is about looking for changes (no matter how small) in behaviors, thoughts and feelings.

You can help save a life by recognizing the warning signs and starting the conversation with your loved one. Suicide is preventable.
